Should the Bears Sign Connor Williams

The Chicago Bears are at a pivotal juncture in their franchise’s reconstruction, and a strategic move they should promptly consider is the acquisition of offensive lineman Connor Williams. His talent and adaptability could significantly enhance the Bears’ offensive line, propelling the team toward a brighter future. Despite a history of injuries, including two ACL tears, Connor Williams has proven to be one of the NFL’s most steadfast and consistent offensive linemen.

Following a season-ending ACL injury in 2019, he made an impressive comeback, participating in every game of the Cowboys’ 2020 season. After a commendable 2021 season, where he allowed the fewest pressures among his teammates, Williams explored free agency in 2022. Transitioning from guard to center with the Dolphins, he established himself as a dependable starting center. However, Williams faced another setback with a knee injury during a game on December 11. His agent described the torn ACL as “pretty significant.” Nonetheless, Williams is optimistic about his recovery and, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, intends to be ready for the 2024 season, aiming to sign with a team before training camp commences. The Bears’ offensive line has been a concern, struggling to protect quarterbacks and to maintain consistency in the running game. By signing Williams, the Bears would gain a seasoned and reliable asset, addressing a critical vulnerability in the middle of the offensive line.

Williams’ versatility is a considerable advantage. Having played primarily as a guard, he has also excelled at center, offering the Bears flexibility in their lineup. His technical prowess and football intelligence would not only enhance the line’s performance but also mentor the younger players, elevating the team’s overall skill.

Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, the Bears’ offense is anticipated to adopt a more dynamic strategy. Williams’ proficiency in both pass protection and run blocking aligns seamlessly with Waldron’s philosophy, making him an ideal fit for the Bears’ evolving offensive scheme.

Securing Williams would not only provide an immediate boost but also contribute to the long-term vision of the franchise. His presence would solidify the offensive line while adding much needed leadership to the group, allowing the Bears to concentrate on fortifying other positions through the draft and free agency, ultimately fostering a more competitive team within the NFC North and in the NFL.

Many analysts believe that the likelihood of the Bears signing Connor Williams is extremely low given his medical history, his possibly high contract demands and the players on the roster in Ryan Bates and Coleman Shelton who are already competing at center.

Williams has shown the ability to overcome major injuries before and at 27 years old, I believe that he can do it again. Coming off of the injury makes it likely that Williams will receive a one to two year prove it deal as opposed to a long term contract. Cap space is fluid, the Bears can add to the cap by restructuring high salary players contracts and there are players on the roster bubble who could be cut to free space for a Williams contract. While Ryan Bates and Coleman Shelton are already competing for the center position, neither has played to the level that Williams has in his career. Adding Williams to the roster would elevate the competition and allow them all to compete for guard positions as well.

While I trust Ryan Poles to do I believe that the Chicago Bears’ pursuit of Connor Williams should be a priority. His track record, versatility, and compatibility with the team’s offensive goals position him as a potential catalyst for taking the Bears’ offense to new heights. Acting now to secure Williams could yield substantial benefits for the franchise in both the short and long term. Squad Up! Beardown!
