As the Chicago Bears gear up for a promising season, the spotlight shines brightly on their new defensive coordinator, Eric Washington. His arrival marks a pivotal moment for the team, heralding a shift in strategy and an infusion of proven expertise. But what exactly does Washington bring to the table that sets him apart from his predecessor?
Washington’s journey through the NFL is nothing short of impressive. Starting as a defensive assistant with the Bears in 2008, he quickly made his mark and was promoted to defensive line coach in 2010. His tenure with the Panthers as a defensive line coach and later as a defensive coordinator saw him sculpt one of the most formidable defensive fronts in the league. Under his guidance, the Panthers’ defense ranked second in the NFL in sacks in 2019.
Transitioning to the Bills, Washington continued to showcase his prowess and further solidified his reputation, where he served as defensive line coach, senior defensive assistant coach, helping the Bills’ defense to be ranked first in points allowed per game in 2021 and consistently remained a top-tier unit in many defensive categories.
Eric Washington’s approach to defense is characterized by his ability to create explosive plays and foster a winning mentality. He has been credited with developing some of the most formidable defensive lines in the league and has a knack for maximizing player potential. He’s not just a tactician; he’s a communicator and a leader. His philosophy revolves around perfecting the system and bringing a wealth of experience to inform and provide different perspectives4. Washington’s focus on making teams one-dimensional and stopping the run aligns perfectly with the Bears’ aspirations to dominate defensively.
In contrast to his predecessor Alan Williams, Washington’s philosophy emphasizes versatility and adaptability. His defenses are known for their aggressive pass rush and ability to disrupt the opponent’s offensive rhythm. He has a unique talent for crafting schemes that leverage his players’ strengths, creating a dynamic and unpredictable defense.
In his first press conference after being hired Washington showed his commitment to excellence by saying. “From my role, you do everything you possibly can to make sure that we perfect our system”. He also emphasized bringing his extensive experience to bear, adding new perspectives and tools to enhance the team’s performance; as well as highlighting the importance of focusing on what the job is, rather than what it isn’t, showcasing his team-first attitude and dedication to the collective goal.
Considering the Bears’ offseason moves, securing Washington as the defensive coordinator is arguably the best signing. While the team has made significant additions, including six-time Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen running back D’Andre Swift and others, it’s the strategic mastermind of Washington that could be the game-changer. His history of transforming defenses into league-leading powerhouses makes him an invaluable asset. Some players who have flourished under Washington’s care were Luke Kuechly who he helped to a first team All Pro in 2018 and a 2nd team All Pro in 2019. Greg Hardy, Mario Addison, Kawann Short, Julius Peppers, and Leonard Floyd all achieved double digit sack totals under his tutelage highlighting his ability to develop a wide variety of pass rushers, and let’s not forget Ed Oliver.
Lastly as the Bears look to the future, Eric Washington stands as a beacon of defensive ingenuity. His appointment is a clear statement of intent: the Chicago Bears are not just aiming to compete; they’re aiming to conquer. With Washington at the helm, the Monsters of the Midway are poised to reclaim their throne as one of the NFL’s most feared defenses.
