BREAKING NEWS Bears Sign Kevin Byard!!!
RYAN POLES gets it DONE, I expected him to find a VALUE at safety and he gets it done, SIGNING Byard to a 2 year $15 million dollar deal!!!
Byard was a 3rd round pick in 2016 out of middle Tennessee state and has quietly been one of the best safeties in football. He was cut by the eagles who are clearing cap space and comes to Chicago on a value deal.
He brings veteran leadership to our young secondary, he is a TWO TIME ALL PRO with 28 career interceptions, and 66 deflected passes. He also has 4 sacks and 15 tackles for loss, he has graded out MUCH HIGHER versus the RUN and PASS than Eddie Jackson has over the years. He has also stayed healthy, starting every game for 7 straight years. KNOCK ON WOOD.
His PFF grades the last 3 years were 74, 79.5 and 90.2, that’s compared to Eddie Jacksons 78.8, 51.0 and 59.4.
BUT the real difference is VERSUS THE RUN.
Byard's last 3 seasons he has graded out 82.1/78.0 and 82.4
Meanwhile, Bojack was 71.6, and back to back years of grading out at 50.0 versus the run.
BYARD IS A CLEAR upgrade against the run game, but also a more productive PLAYMAKER in the secondary as well. He has nearly DOUBLE the interceptions that Eddie Jackson does, and twice as many all pro awards to boot.
His ability to stay healthy AND MAKE TACKLES are what should REAALY upgrade this defense!!! He is an EXTREMELY reliable tackler. He has NEARLY as many career interceptions as he does missed tackles
Eddie Jackson missed way too many tackles. Pretty much a 15% chance he is going to miss a tackle, almost 10% higher than Byard's 6.6% career mark.
So, lets recap, he is a better tackler, more productive, has stayed healthy and is a LEADER in the secondary, and then on top of that, he comes in at around HALF THE CAP HIT THAT EDDIE JACKSON WOULD HAVE.
Signing for 2 years and 15 million, where Bojack AVERAGED $15 MILLION A SEASON.
THIS IS A BIG WIN FOR RYAN POLES< IMMEDIATELY gives us one of the best secondary's in the NFL after locking up Jaylon Johnson to pair with Kyler Gordon, Jaquan Brisker, Tyrique Stevenson and company. This secondary is LOCKED AND LOADED and ready to win now.
Byard will provide veteran leadership to this young group, and ALSO NOT prevent ryan poles from DRAFTING a safety to develop behind him.
This should leave the bears with approximately $55 million in cap space left, but we do NOT know how this contract was structured yet so that is an estimation.
But Aaron Wilson from REPORTED it is $7.5 annual average compensation and $15 million total. A NICE VALUE signing by the bears!!!
This pretty much completes our secondary BEFORE we even get to free agency.
Great move Ryan Poles!!
