Strengths: Evades pressure and maneuvers around the pocket like a magician. Has a LIVE arm, and can make all the throws on the field. Can throw off platform and excels at extending plays and finding open guys down the field. While not a FREAK athlete, he is definitely an athletic quarterback. He has great speed and is a natural runner.
He sometimes flashes SPECIAL awareness in the Pocket. Having the Presence of mind make the right decision when things fall apart. He has a MAHOMES LIKE ability to make plays OFF STRUCTURE. That part of his game is special, but that is also the HARDEST THING TO TRANSLATE INTO THE NFL.
His ability to throw on the run is also rare. When he sets his feet, he has enough arm strength to make into the NFL.
I’ve seen him throw 65+ yard bombs on target across the field. He can throw from anywhere, in the pocket out of the pocket, on the run, backpedaling or off balance.
He has near elite level of accuracy. While I won’t deny some ball placement issues at times, his accuracy should translate to the NFL. His release is quick and smooth. Has a unique ability to pull of SPECTATULAR plays. He keeps his eyes downfield and manipulates defenders in the pocket while remaining mobile. His arm STRENGTH is unquestioned. He can make tight window throws and contort his body to throw at different arm angles, including side arm passes. Altering his arm angle on the fly is what most gets him comparisons to Patrick Mahomes. His ability to maneuver around the pocket and keep his eyes downfield while avoiding pass rushes, and then finishing it off with off platform throws is magical.
He can throw ANYWHERE on the field, at almost anytime. His arm talent is by FAR his biggest strength. He has an arm that could be TOP 10 in the NFL. His arm is so good that it sometimes overshadows his weaknesses. It allows him to make mistakes and still come away with a big play. HIS ARM TALENT IS SPECIAL. That is undeniable. HE can make throws that only 5-10 QBs in the NFL can make.I compare him more to Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray, with potentially a better arm. I see a lot of DAK PRESCOTT in his game as well. I think Caleb has all the tools to be a top 10 quarterback in the NFL.
Caleb’s weaknesses:
Does NOT throw with anticipation enough. While there are some instances on film, I need to see MORE of it. He too often waits for guys to get open and sees them late. Not seen “throwing guys open” enough. While he will RIP a tight window pass, I didn’t see him THROWING guys open much. Struggles with pressure at times. While a lot of his spectacular plays come off script, but he will panic and fumble in clutch situations. Has to learn to throw the ball away and not throw so many dangerous passes. He lacks accuracy on TOUCH passes. Fails to consistently hit tight window passes. Holds the ball too long. Struggles to recognize blitzes. He Operated almost PRIMARILY out of the shotgun. Playing from under center will be an adjustment to him. His size and speed is QUESTIONABLE to translate into the NFL. He does not have the frame or size to be a runner like Lamar Jackson or Justin fields.
He holds the ball too loosely and has way too many fumbles on tape. 31 FUMBLES IN 3 YEARS. Seems to pass up on EASY throws and bail on the pocket early. He likes to hold the ball and pass up checkdowns, constantly playing HERO ball and looking for home runs. Its almost like sometimes he has his decision PREDETERMINED in his head, and fails to take what the defense gives him. Most of his highlights are OFF script and not the result of operating “On time”.Struggles at pre-snap adjustments and “READING Defenses”. He operated a primarily ONE read offense at USC and I think he might struggle to adjust to running an NFL offense, UNLESS he is paired with a coordinator LIKE Kliff Kingsbury, with the commanders. Some of his highlight reel plays will NOT translate in the NFL.
I have heard rumblings of CONCERNS about his FOOTBALL character, but without knowing him or interviewing him I will not comment on that, but it is something that ryan poles would NEED to investigate if he wants to draft him. Caleb needs to get better at a LOT of things in the NFL, he is NOT a safe prospect or a “SURE THING”. He does have a TON of talent.
HOWEVER I believe he is being SEVERELY OVERRATED by some fans and people in the media.
Some people are CONVINCED that Caleb is GENERATIONAL and the best QB prospect to come out since Andrew Luck.
I AM NOT CONVINED that he is EVEN the BEST quarterback in THIS YEARS DRAFT…..YET.RIGHT NOW I have Caleb as my QB1 in this draft class. He has special arm talent and can make EVERY throw, even off platform. HIS Arm talent is SPECIAL and makes him a highly sought after QB prospect that could blossom into a star in the NFL. HOWEVER, he is NOT on the level or prospect of an Andrew luck or Peyton Manning. HE HAS LEGIT Question marks entering the NFL. The NFL is about making plays on TIME and in the pocket and Caleb’s ability to do that is a concern. He has NOT operated under center and that’s a huge concern. His hand size and height are concerns to me, WE will find out more about that in a couple weeks at the combine.BUT for people pretending Caleb is PERFECT and a SURE THING, I have to ask WHY.The simple fact is that he is an AWESOME prospect with tantalizing upside but there are REAL concerns if you ask me.
Quarterbacks are NEVER “Safe”. Similar to last year when the media overhyped Bryce Young, ITS VERY possible that Caleb is the FIRST QB taken but NOT the best QB in the draft. I am NOT finished evaluating Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye yet, but I WILL BE SOON Those evaluations to come.
We see this happen all the time in the NFL, the billionaires in charge of these decisions OFTEN make the wrong choice.
Quarterbacks are almost impossible to evaluate.
I LOVE CALEB WILLIAMS UPSIDE!!! You guys who watch my videos often know how big I am on WHAT A PLAYER CAN DO, and the upside they bring. Caleb Williams would offer as much upside as any player we’ve ever drafted. I don’t think ANY Bears fan should be trying to tear the dude down. HE Is a top 5 player in this years draft, but PEOPLE just seem to FORGET that QUARTERBACKS are the riskiest positions to draft in the entire NFL.
I’ve tried to remind people of this recently and done a TON of research on the topic, but I don’t want people to misunderstand.
I THINK CALEB IS AN AWESOME QB prospect, but he is not even CLOSE to the best prospect ive seen.
I DON’T EVEN think he’s as good of a prospect as JUSTIN FIELDS was. OR Joe Burrow or Trevor Lawrence. HE is not ON that tier. THAT Is not knocking him, just giving an HONEST evaluation. HE IS Better than Kyler Murray was coming out, and probably above BOTH CJ Stroud and Bryce Young. THAT DOES NOT MEAN HIS SUCCESS WILL TRANSLATE TO THE NFL like Cj Stroud did.
The question is WHICH GUY GETS US CLOSER TO A SUPER BOWL. Because at the end of the day, that’s all the matter, and in the NFL you need a ton of talent and a quarterback to win a super bowl.
Caleb Williams is 22 years old and has a LOT of question marks, in fact he has a TON OF THE SAME question marks that JUSTIN FIELDS has. THAT Is one of my biggest points. His issues are so similar to fields.
Justin is only 24 years old. JUST two years older than Caleb. He is also taller, and BIGGER and already proven that he has the TOUGHNESS for the NFL. He’s also gotten better EVERY single year and this locker room believes in him.
THAT makes this the toughest decision in Chicago bears history. NEVER have we had a QB with as much upside as Justin Fields. We’ve also never had an opportunity to draft a prospect with as much upside as Caleb Williams has. SAYING that Justin fields has not been put in the OPTIMAL situation is an understatement, but he has had THREE years in the NFL and there are still concerns with his game.
I AM On record that I would CONTINUE to build around Justin fields and my top prospect in this draft is MARVIN HARRISON JR.
THAT DOES NOT mean I wouldn’t buy a Caleb Williams jersey day 1. HE IS AN EXTREMELY EXCITING Prospect with incredible upside. His arm talent alone is worth taking #1 overall most years. THERE IS A REASON that Caleb gets so much hype from the national media. I just believe he has been OVERHYPED to a point and some people are choosing to completely overlook his flaws. HE DOES HAVE FLAWS. His game is NOT perfect. His talent is REAL. His arm is INCREDIBLE.THE BOTTOM line with Caleb Williams: WHILE not a “GENERATIONAL” prospect, he might be a ONCE in every 2-3 years TYPE of Quarterback. He is better than your “Average” top Quarterback and deserves some real hype for whichever team is lucky enough to land him.
To me Caleb is a much better prospect than Bryce Young, and is a mix of Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray & Dak Prescott who should have success in the NFL, but could have a transition period. While I think the Patrick Mahomes comparisons put unfair pressure on Williams, he does have a “SPECIAL” element of his game and I see shades of Aaron Rodgers when he’s maneuvering the pocket and making big time plays. Caleb's weaknesses are all fixable and he has ALL of the tools you want in a franchise quarterback. he is currently the #2 player on my big board, behind ONLY Marvin Harrison Jr.
I want to make ONE final point here, my evaluation is STRICLY Based on Caleb's film. It has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with whether or not his dad wants to play for the bears or him painting his nails. This evaluation is based on FILM study only. I take scouting reports pretty seriously.
