Bears Franchise QB Caleb Williams

Updated: Jun 11

This article covers EVERYTHING you need to know about Chicago Bears #1 draft pick Caleb Williams: Get ready buckle up and Bear Down!!! In preparation for this I've watched every game he played live last year, then I re-watched all of his all 22 film and did a full scouting report that was over two months ago since then I've re-watched every single game of his All-22, some of them over and over. After that I dug even deeper and compiled all of his advanced statistics on him now I want to talk about what the Chicago Bears are getting and what Caleb Williams brings to this franchise let's get right into it: First let's dive into some of the advanced statistics from Caleb's college career and then an even more in-depth Scouting Report. This is a guy who did not throw a single interception in his entire two years at USC on third or fourth down!!!!!! On top of that he didn't throw a single single interception in the fourth quarter or the Red Zone all year in 2023!! Let's look at some of his Advanced statistics for his entire college career:

Throughout his career on third down he threw 23 touchdowns to just two interceptions. In the third quarter, he threw 26 touchdowns to just 4 interceptions. He only threw one career interception in the fourth quarter compared to 16 touchdowns!!!!! However the really special stat comes once Caleb enters the red zone or the Gold Zone as Matt Eberflus likes to call it. CW was absolutely ridiculous tossing 61 touchdowns to just one interception for his career inside the Red Zone!!!! 61 TDs to just 1 INT. Let that sink in. Caleb has an adjusted completion percentage of 77.5% his overall PFF grade was 90.3 but he graded out even better when he had a clean pocket or took a deep shot down the field Caleb had an interception rate of just 1% for his career meanwhile his big- time throw rate was 6.2% with an average depth of Target of 10 yards and he got 9.1 yards per attempt he simply put up video game type numbers and takes his game to another level when it matters most PLC which is the performance lab of California charted Caleb Williams throwing release and how ridiculously quick it is. They timed his release at just 0.28 seconds which is mind-blowing I've mentioned his lightning quick release multiple times but this kind of puts it into context bottom line is he put up those video game type numbers but enough about the statistics let's break down what Caleb Williams brings to the Chicago Bears.

His arm Talent is special but my favorite part of his game is his ability to manipulate defenders in the pocket whether it's sliding, shuffling, resetting or even backpedaling. He simply does it all to escape defenders!! He does this while keeping his eyes down filled and ready to attack the defense in the blink of an eye!! HOWEVER, it's not just his ability to make Defenders Miss it's his uncanny awareness from within the pocket. How he understands leverage with his offensive lineman he can use subtle steps to buy himself more time in the pocket and his creativity is special and unique the term escape artist fits him well in the pocket his ability to make something out of nothing and he has this magical ability to just make things happen!!!

His ability to drift and float away from pressure to buy his receivers just that little bit of extra time to get open is just another special quality to his game, but then we get to his release speed. I saw it on tape and it's just insane but I mentioned earlier that PLC tracked his release time to 0.28 seconds which is the absolute definition of lightning quick most QB's average release time is between 4 and 5 seconds Caleb releases the ball almost twice as fast. It's something that's hard to measure but thankfully the performance lab of California did us all that favor and put out a chartable number. I've talked about his arm talent nonstop but I haven't heard enough people talking about his release. Caleb's release speed is just lightning quick and it's capable of making defenders look silly. He gets the ball out so quickly that it can catch defenders off guard and his release speed on his throws is simply insane. Then you get to his off platform throwing a lot of people don't really understand what this means but watching Caleb it becomes really clear the special arm talent that he brings to the table. He can make the most incredible throws without having a solid base or even having his feet set his ability to torque his body or flick his wrist and make incredible throws even while falling leaning or even jumping to make big time passes. He is a pure playmaker at the quarterback position. He has an uncanny ability to generate enough torque to sling the ball anywhere on the football field at any time. The arm talent alone is enough for him to be the number one pick. His talent is off the charts; I could spend an entire video just talking about his arm but I think everyone already knows he has a special arm...but DID YOU KNOW he also has Next Level accuracy. It's not just his accuracy throwing the football but his uncanny ability to find throwing lanes and then contort his body and arm to place the ball exactly where it needs to be while avoiding defenders that are trying to bat the ball down.

This ability is simply special and something you cannot teach in the NFL and Caleb Williams brings this unique ability to place the ball exactly where he needs to no matter how he has to contort his body. Then we get to what I believe is the most overlooked aspect of his game: Caleb's ability as a runner. I think it's extremely underrated. He's big fast strong elusive and creative with his running. On top of that his contact balance is the most impressive thing with his running ability and he can just make these subtle jukes to beat guys. Plus he has this next level spatial awareness.

Caleb doesn't like to run the football. Period. He prefers to beat teams with his arm and I love that about his game. But also knowing he has the ability to beat teams with his legs when he needs to is just another positive and the cherry on top of his game.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE

Something else that really stands out with Caleb Williams his football intelligence. I think his football awareness is off the charts. Just another trait that isn't talked about enough with Caleb Williams. I believe this could be his most special trait. A unique ability to Control the Chaos around him and understand how to navigate inside the pocket understand where the pressure is coming from. All of that while also being able get rid of the ball and not take a lot of those negative plays! His football intelligence for his age is simply Elite! Whether he's doing RPOs, play actions, Zone reads or whatever Shane Waldron dials up. He will simply put pressure on defenses. He does this by constantly keeping his eyes up field and he looks for throwing lanes not running lanes!! Pair that with his insanely quick release and it allows him to get rid of the ball so quickly!!!

Caleb is just always looking for different ways to beat teams with his arm!! His creativity is next level and he has a special feel for the game that is hard to put into words or put on paper.

He is just a special special football player and should be a unique playmaker at the NFL level.

Best Prospect The Bears EVER HAD, but nobody is perfect:

Caleb isn't without some weaknesses. Some of it comes from how good of a football player he is. Sometimes he simply relies too much on his arm talent. I saw too many times on tape where he passes up an easy read looking to make a bigger play. BUT most of this came in 2023. I've added context here when you go back to 2022 and see how special his connection was with Jordan Addison. He had an INSANE ability to work in the structure of the offense and throw with anticipation. Then suddenly the hero ball that you see on tape in 2023 almost felt like a necessity. Caleb was trying to make that team better and carry them to a level they didn't deserve to be at but still he has to get back to taking what the defense is given him when he gets to the NFL. Another thing Caleb did not do was operate under Center. That's not a huge concern for me, he showed he can do it at his Pro Day and already has 3 weeks of OTAs at Halas Hall without many issues. He is still learning and working on his cadence, but no reason to believe he won't excel here as well. the biggest concern for me is that Caleb fumbled the ball more than any top QB Prospect in recent history. the other worthies don't even bother me very much. you can throw them out the window if you want but the fumbles have to concern you at least a little bit.

***32 fumbles in 3 years*** No matter how you look at it, 32 fumbles in 3 years is awful! It's more than Drake May and Jaden Daniels combined. In Jaden's five years of college football and Drake May's two plus they fumbled the ball a combined 29 times in seven years of football!!

That's four less than Caleb fumbled in three years!!

(DATA AND IMAGE BY PRO FOOTBALL FOCUS)

The only QB recently with more fumbles than Caleb had in college was Kenny Picket. As Bears fans we heard a lot about Justin fields and his fumbles over the last few years. Fields only had 15 fumbles compared to Caleb's whopping 33 in college. I don't want to overrate this. I do think Caleb can easily improve on this and get better in the NFL but it is one area that he does need to continue working to get better at. He has to learn to protect the football!! I believe Matt Eberflus is a perfect head coach for this!! He's almost Ultra conservative and preaches taking care of the football!! I also believe there are a lot of reasons for some of the fumbles...

I think Caleb tried to carry USC more often than not he would put that team on his back which resulted in him playing too much hero ball and that led to a lot of the fumbles. With better structure and more Talent around him in the NFL, along with the help of his coaches. I believe Caleb can clean that up and be the Prospect he was destined to be.

He WILL be a superstar quarterback in the NFL but that is his biggest concern that I noticed on tape. He holds the ball away from his body a lot when he's scrambling or maneuvering in the pocket but none of his weaknesses are things that cannot be coached out of him or corrected.

I also truly believe a lot of them came from him trying to carry a team where he was clearly the most talented player on the roster.

Caleb Williams is simply special he's a pure passer!! A guy so talented that he is both an artist and a surgeon at the Quarterback position.

He's able to create magnificent works of art on the football field but also able to dial it in and dissect the defense with pinpoint accuracy.

Caleb Williams does need to be more consistent and he needs to get better at working on schedule within the structure of an offense but his ability to create, paired with his incredible football awareness and one-of-a-kind arm talent.... Put all of that together and you have a truly one-of-a-kind, unique playmaker.

He is really both an artist and a surgeon at the quarterback position.

I believe Caleb has all of the traits to succeed in the NFL and he's entering arguably one of the best situations that any quarterback taken number one overall has in NFL history. The Bears haven't picked number one overall since the draft switched formats. They haven't made a choice like this since the 1940s and I believe that Caleb Williams is the guy to lead this franchise to a NEW ERA of football.

He is truly unique and special playmaker who has the chance to be one of the best quarterbacks in the entire NFL and could easily be the best the Bears have ever had, as early as this season!!! Those expectations are insane but if anyone can live up to the hype, Caleb Williams is that guy.

I believe he will lead the Chicago Bears into a new era football and break every passing record in the books!!!! Caleb is serious about wanting to win and his Camp let Ryan Poles know that early on!!

Our GM also seems serious about wanting to win himself!!

It truly is time for a new era of Chicago Bears football led by Ryan Poles and Caleb Williams!!!

This Time It's Different I think Caleb Williams will be the franchise quarterback that we've all dreamed about his awareness inside the PO pocket combined with his lightning quick release off the charts football IQ and insane arm Talent he is simply the full package I'm ready for Caleb Williams to lead this franchise to a new era of Chicago Bears football!
