Bargain Hunting: The Chicago Bears Search for an Edge Rusher

As the Chicago Bears look to bolster their defensive line, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that the team is interested in signing a "bargain" free agent edge rusher. The familiar face on the Bears' radar is Yannick Ngakoue. The 29-year-old edge rusher spent the 2023 season in Chicago, and while his overall production was underwhelming, there were signs of life when paired with the emerging Montez Sweat. Ngakoue recently expressed his desire to "reestablish" himself as one of the league's premier pass rushers, indicating a willingness to sign a "prove-it" deal. If the Bears can secure Ngakoue on a more team-friendly contract, say in the $4-$6 million range, it could be a worthwhile gamble. His track record of success early in his career suggests he still has the potential to be an above-average pass rusher, and the familiarity with the system and his teammates could help him regain his footing.

A rotational role alongside Sweat could unlock Ngakoue's best attributes and provide the Bears with a solid edge-rushing duo. Another name that stands out as the top target is Calais Campbell. The 37-year-old veteran has aged gracefully, maintaining his productivity even in the latter stages of his career. With a PFF grade of 80.2 against the run last season, Campbell could provide a versatile presence, capable of lining up at both edge and interior defensive line positions. Campbell's wealth of experience and leadership could be invaluable for a Bears defense looking to take the next step. While he may not be an every-down player at this stage, pairing him with the likes of Demarcus Walker and potentially a young talent like Austin Booker could create a formidable rotation.

At a reasonable price tag, Campbell's proven track record and ability to mentor younger players make him an enticing option for the Bears. As the Bears explore more cost-effective options, the names of Emmanuel Ogbah and Carl Lawson have emerged as potential targets. Both players have dealt with injury issues in recent seasons, but when healthy, they have shown the ability to be productive pass rushers. Ogbah, a former Chief who spent the last few years with the Dolphins, has demonstrated his versatility, playing both as a defensive end and tackle. His 15-game, 5-sack season in 2023 suggests he can still contribute at a high level.

Lawson, on the other hand, has been plagued by injuries, playing in just 6 games last season with the Jets. However, his 2020 and 2022 campaigns, where he combined for 13 sacks, indicate he can be an impact player when on the field. These players may come at a lower price point, making them intriguing options for the Bears. If they can stay healthy and recapture their previous form, Ogbah and Lawson could provide valuable pass-rushing depth and rotational support for the defense.

Ultimately, the Bears' search for a "bargain" edge rusher will come down to finding the right balance of production, cost, and fit within their defensive scheme. Whether it's a seasoned veteran like Campbell, a familiar face in Ngakoue, or a high-upside reclamation project like Ogbah or Lawson, the Bears will need to carefully evaluate the available options and make a strategic signing that bolsters their pass-rushing arsenal. As the offseason progresses, Bears fans will eagerly await the team's decision on their edge rusher target. With the right addition, the Bears' defense could become dominant in the 2024 season.
